Wheel Angle Alignment Service Explained
When you schedule a Land Rover four-wheel alignment with our Hinsdale service department, one of our automotive technicians will restore your wheel angles to their original factory settings. We’ll use computerized assistance to realign the camber, caster, and toe of each wheel so that they are in the correct positions. As a result, it will track straight when you are driving on a straight-away, and your tires will last longer.
Alignment Service 101
There are three terms you should know the meaning of in order to understand what this maintenance involves. They are the caster, camber, and toe-in. Camber is the front wheel’s angle when looked at from the front. Caster refers to the angle the front wheels take when you turn the steering wheel. Toe-in is the distance from the front of each of the front tires to their backs. When aligned, the wheels should be parallel.
Signs of Needing Wheel Alignment
Driving on the roads of Naperville or Wheaton, or the streets of Chicago with their many potholes and speed bumps can affect any or all three of these, and with them, the drive of your car and the optimal life span of your tires.
If the camber is out of alignment, it will cause one side of the tire to wear, and the vehicle will have a pulling problem
If the caster needs adjusting, the vehicle will wander and you will have trouble driving in a straight line.
If the toe-in is not set at zero, meaning the tires are lined up with each other, it will result in premature wear to both tires and display what is known as a saw tooth pattern since that is what the wear looks like.
The Two Types of Wheel Alignment
All four wheels will be measured in both types, but only the front ones will be adjusted in a two-wheel alignment. This is done on vehicles that lack adjustment hardware on the rear wheels. In a full four-wheel alignment, the rear wheels will be trued up before the front ones are adjusted. This type of full adjustment is the best wheel alignment. But both will work their magic on your Land Rover, resulting in tires that last longer, a vehicle that handles better, provides a comfortable ride, and gets better mileage. In other words, it will drive like a Land Rover should – how it felt when you drove it home for the first time. If you live in the greater Chicago area, and drive a Land Rover, Hinsdale Land Rover can provide the best wheel alignment since our technicians know all the proper settings, and our state of the art service center is stocked with Land Rover specified tools and instruments.
