A brake fluid exchange is a key part of your long-term Land Rover maintenance plan. Following a pre-specified, manufacturer-recommended fluid exchange schedule keeps your system operating at the highest possible level with superior braking performance. Think about how fast your Land Rover is hurtling down the highway and how you stop it. You press your foot on the brake pedal, and your vehicle slows from a speed of 70 mph or above to a stop. Your foot didn’t do that alone. Your braking system did the heavy lifting — or slowing — thanks to your brake fluid and hydraulic pressure. When you tap or hit the brakes, you set a series of actions in motion that end with pressure from your brake fluid helping your brake pads press against your brake rotors or brake discs.
In a brake fluid exchange, your old brake fluid is drained from your brake fluid reservoir and replaced with a new manufacturer-recommended Land Rover brake fluid. The fluid is drained directly from the reservoir, and a certified technician also uses tubing to flush brake fluid from your brake valves. This tubing is connected after your Land Rover is raised on the rack and the four wheels removed.
All of the pressure of your braking system and general wear and tear can “break” your brake fluid down over a period of years. It can also be degraded by its exposure to the normal moisture in the air. As the fluid quality diminishes, it no longer provides a high level of braking power.
Your brake fluid needs to be checked at regularly prescribed intervals as part of a larger brake inspection. A brake fluid flush or replacement should be pursued approximately every 24 months or 24,000 miles.
